Truffles are found in Istria dating back at least eighteen centuries. Roman Emperors a well known gourmets and Austrian-Hungarian aristocrats prized them. During the five centuries of Venetian rule over Istria, Motovun Forest then called The Forest of St. Marcus
was open only to a few individuals, our ancestors, who were allowed to hunt for truffles. When Austro-Hungarian Empire took rule
over this area, there was only one final destination for the Istrian truffle – the Royal Palace in Vienna.
Maria Teresa herself, on her journey from Trieste to Vienna, visited the Motovun Forest to try this Istrian jewel.
On the Vienna Congress in 1815, truffles were officially on the menu for the fist time.
